MAR Showcases Milestone at Premier Maritime Event in Norway

As the Madeira International Shipping Register (MAR) celebrates a historic milestone of 1,100 merchant vessels registered, SDM proudly takes part in Nor-Shipping, Norway’s leading maritime industry event and one of the most prestigious gatherings on the global shipping calendar.

Held biennially, Nor-Shipping brings together top-tier shipowners, consultants, and operators from across Norway and Europe, offering a prime platform for connecting, collaborating, and showcasing innovation in the maritime sector.

During this year’s edition—taking place in the first week of June—SDM, in partnership with Euromar and with the institutional support of AICEP, will present the advantages of registering with MAR. This dedicated presentation aims to strengthen MAR’s presence in the Norwegian and broader Scandinavian market, a region globally recognized for its excellence in ship management and maritime operations.

Recent data underscores MAR’s growing international appeal: as of 30 April 2025, the register includes 1,230 vessels—1,080 merchant ships and 150 yachts. MAR-registered merchant ships boast an impressive gross tonnage of 27,462,669, with an average of 25,457 gross tons per vessel and an average age of just 13.6 years, reflecting a modern, high-quality fleet under a recognized flag.

SDM’s presence at Nor-Shipping is part of a long-standing collaboration with AICEP to promote the Madeira International Business Centre across strategic global markets.

As announced by AICEP, its President, Ricardo Arroja, will be in Oslo to lead a major initiative promoting Portugal’s Blue Economy during the Nor-Shipping fair.

This mission aligns with Portugal’s broader strategy to boost exports and attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in key areas such as innovation, sustainability, and the maritime energy transition. The initiative also aims to enhance global recognition of Portugal’s expertise across the Blue Economy value chain—showcasing the strengths of Madeira’s ship registry, its leadership in eco-retrofitting and alternative fuels, and its cutting-edge digital and innovation ecosystems.
